While filing taxes may seem intimidating, SERVE provides easy access to training material, paving a clear pathway to joining the IRS VITA program.

Roadmap

Step 1: Launch a Chapter

Join SERVE by starting a chapter at your school. Recruit students who show initiative and want to help their community. Members must be at least 16 years old to volunteer, but students can join the club at any age.

Step 2: Teach

Partner with a nearby VITA site and use SERVE's curriculum. Use practice quizzes and prepare for the VITA exam. Students should be prepared by December to take the exam.

Step 3: Exams

The VITA exam is a series of three tests. The first two are multiple choice, and the third consists of practice filing and multiple choice questions. All of the tests are open note, and require 80% proficiency to pass.

Step 4: Volunteer

Volunteer at a VITA site weekly for a minimum of three hours (site dependent). Help low-income families file their taxes for free and earn volunteer hours.
